The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed its condolences to President René Préval and the people of Haiti over the devastating earthquake in the country's capital, Port-au-Prince, which killed thousands of people and rendered many homeless.

In a condolence message by the Vice President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, on behalf of the
Government, he said that the news of the 7.0 magnitude quake which struck as night fell in Haiti on Tuesday was received with shock.

Jonathan said that the earthquake and its consequent destruction and loss of lives occurs at a time Haiti is facing crucial challenges of nation building.

He expressed Nigeria's sympathy with Haiti noting that Nigerians share in the grief of their Haitian brothers and sisters.

``The Government and People of the Federal Republic of Nigeria express their condolences to President René Préval, Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive and the People of Haiti over the devastating earthquake.

``Our hearts grieve at the magnitude of the devastation, the extensive destruction and the thousands of lives that were lost in the disaster.

``The earthquake and consequent loss of lives and extensive destruction came at a time Haiti was conscientiously addressing the challenges of nation building.

``As the international community mobilises in aid of Haiti it can count on Nigeria's support and understanding in all ways."
